Dogs snuggled down at your feet while you watch telly in the lounge room - sweet.
No dogs in bedrooms or kitchens though.
I agree they are family and should be treated with love; lots of pats & cuddles, but they do walk & sniff around in some dubious places that I'd rather not have contact with.
There is a third group of people - more a sub-group probably.
Those who can't possibly leave home without their pooch - so bring it with them when visiting and ignore the pooch-inside rules when they do.

Dogs inside. They're family and live to love their family. Milly's sleeping in her beanbag in front of the telly right now...
...I get a good deal out of it too, because there's nothing nicer than being able to pat her coat or ruffle her ears in the evenings.
